Fed: Energy industry needs image makeover: minister
Federal Resources Minister IAN MACFARLANE says Australia's energy industry needs an
extreme makeover to clean up its ugly image.
Mr MACFARLANE has told the zero emissions technologies conference on the Gold Coast
that the public perception of the energy sector is that it is big, black and ugly.
He says no amount of sport and cultural sponsorship will overcome the image problem.
Mr MACFARLANE is urging the industry to better communicate its efforts in reducing
greenhouse gas emissions.
The minister says Australia's huge coal reserves are the envy of the world, but also
carry the obligation to pursue cleaner energy options.
He says energy providers should continue to develop clean coal technologies while greenhouse
strategies are still voluntary.
But Mr MACFARLANE rejects a Labor Party proposal to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.
He says such a policy would cost the Australian industry dearly, including jobs.
The conference ends tomorrow.
