Qld: Oil companies driving up petrol prices on Anzac Day
A petrol price watchdog says the major oil companies are behind the unbelievable eight
cents a litre price rise in petrol throughout southeast Queensland.
FuelTrac managing director GEOFF TROTTER says the average bowser price of unleaded
petrol was up from an average of 83.5 cents a litre on Tuesday morning to 91.4 cents a
litre on Anzac Day.
He says the industry claimed the increase was due to rises in wholesale prices sparked
by a jump in price of the refined product in Singapore.
Mr TROTTER says this may be fundamentally true but what surprised everyone was the
increase across the total market within the space of 12 hours.
He says he believes the rise was driven by the oil companies who control the refineries.
Australian Consumer and Competition Commission chief ALLAN FELS yesterday said oil
companies were being opportunistic by slugging motorists with the extra cost.
