QLD: Beattie ready to debate Hanson

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says he'd welcome a debate with One Nation leader
PAULINE HANSON before Saturday's state poll.

Mr BEATTIE will go head-to-head with Opposition Leader ROB BORBIDGE in a televised
debate on Channel Nine in Brisbane on Friday.

He says he doesn't fear political parties getting involved in the debate about issues.

Ms HANSON has returned to Brisbane after her party played a major role in Saturday's
defeat of the Court Government in Western Australia.

Mr BEATTIE says One Nation could also have a significant impact on the Queensland outcome
because in WA the party had directed preferences away from sitting government members.

Seventeen National Party branches in Queensland have agreed to swap preference with
One Nation in next Saturday's election.

But Mr BEATTIE says One Nation's policies are harmful to Queensland's economy and after
11 members were elected in 1998 he had travelled to Asian countries to allay fears of
racial tension by business and tourists.
