BRISBANE, April 9 AAP - Let them eat cake!
Federal Opposition Leader Simon Crean has called for the strictly enforced one kilogramlimit on parcels to troops in the Gulf to be lifted.
He said this would allow families to send home-made fruit cakes to their loved ones in the Gulf.
Mr Crean told families at a garden party for defence force families in Brisbane todayhe would be throwing his weight behind the bid for bigger cakes and more goodies fromhome.
"There is a weight limit on parcels which can be sent to the Gulf," Mr Crean told reportersat Queensland Government House.
"But in other theatres of war, the weight limit is a lot higher.
"I think in the circumstances, the same leniency should be given and I'll be bringingthis up with the defence forces and the government."
Mr Crean declined to say what the limit should be but said many families he had spokento wanted to send more home comforts such as cakes and toiletries to their sons and daughters.
Home baking and fruit cakes were a particular concern.
"They are well sought after, fruit cakes," Mr Crean said.
"There was one that was two kilograms and had to be cut in half and sent as two packages."
The Labor leader said the restriction was "silly".
"Don't put a weight on love and affection - especially home cooking," he said.
